Series 3: Episode 15 - the author on her favourite line from a book...
“Ahead was a mounted policeman in khaki, directing traffic. He raised his baton. The car slowed suddenly, pressing Brett against her. “Yes,” I said, “Isn’t it pretty to think so.”
That is a line from Ernest Hemingway’s ‘The Sun Also Rises’. It’s the very end of the book and, and I think for many young people that last line – ‘Isn’t it pretty to think so” has probably inspired many young people to become writers. It’s one of the last lines of a book that really sums up the complete irony and in fact the, in a sense, uselessness of the narrator’s life and it’s a very powerful line.
