In our family we love picnics and we love ‘The Wind in the Willows’ and so for my favourite quote from a book it’s a perfect combination of picnics and ‘The Wind in the Willows’, it’s in fact the picnic in ‘The Wind in the Willows’, when Ratty is telling Moley what’s in the luncheon basket they’re about to take on the river, and what’s lovely about this quote is it’s written all as one long sentence without any gaps between the words, so it’s a list but there are no gaps at all so it’s one long sequence of letters.

“Cold tongue, cold ham, cold beef, picked gherkin, salad, French rolls, cress sandwiches, pot of meat, ginger beer, lemonade, soda water…” ‘oh stop, stop’ cried the Moley in ecstasies, ‘this is too much!’”
