Libby Purves

Libby Purves' favourite line is from E.M. Forster's Howard's End

This is from E M Forster’s ‘Howard’s End’ and it is a profoundly reassuring sentiment in this line.  Margaret Schlegel, the very earnest intellectual has got married and is finding she has less and less time for keeping up with all the new cultural developments.

‘It was doubtless a pity not to keep up with [Verdikind] or John, but some closing of the gates is inevitable after 30 if the mind itself is to become a creative power.

You see, your mind is becoming a creative power.  You don’t have to go and see the latest David Hare play.  It is not necessary to read the entire Booker Short List.  Thank you, E M Forster.
