Moon Tiger by Penelope Lively
"This is beautiful book. Claudia, the heroine is a historian who is 76, and who thinks she's dying. As she lies in her hospital bed, she drifts in and out of consciousness and remembers the details of her long and eventful life. This is a book about hisotry, it's a book about storytelling, but most of all it's a book about love, as she remembers the people she loved and those that loved her. I've read it many times, and each time i read it, I find something new. I love it because it does what I think books should do: it makes me think and it makes me cry."
