Adam Hughes from Borders

Show 12: Adam Hughes from Borders reveals his best book club read...

Borders is an international bookseller based in Ann Arbor, Michigan. A Fortune 500 company, it is the second-largest bookstore chain in the United States after Barnes & Noble. In the UK, Borders are largely based in and around London and major cities.

Here, Adam Hughes recommends Giovanni’s Room by James Baldwin.

First published in 1957, this book attempts to tackle the conflict between homosexual and heterosexual love. It tells of David, a young man awakening to his true homosexual nature, through a relationship with a barman named Giovanni, as he awaits his fiancée's arrival from Spain.

When David meets the sensual Giovanni in a bohemian bar, he is swept into a passionate love affair. But his girlfriend's return to Paris destroys everything. Unable to admit to the truth, David pretends the liaison never happened, while Giovanni's life descends into tragedy.
