Tills second-hand bookshop has been open in Edinburgh for over twenty years, is situated near the university, and is popular with students, not least for its cosy open fire during the cold Scottish winters.
Zarya’s recommendation is Oranges are Not the Only Fruit by Jeanette Winterson. “It’s a fictionalised biography that follows the narrator from early childhood with a very religious mother to her late 20s, when she’s broken out of the rigid way of looking at the world that she was brought up with. It explores the technique of storytelling with a number of different narrative styles. It’s also very funny, which tricks you into absorbing the deeper messages. This really is a wonderful book.”
