Waiting for the Barbarians by JM Coetzee

“I think Coetzee is a brilliant writer, but this book I like in particular because of his ability to get so much across in so few sentences is just amazing. His books are usually quite short, but you can get so much out of them by reading just one paragraph. And more importantly for me, this book is this discussion that’s familiar to me about who is a Barbarian, and if you wait for a Barbarian, what does that make you? There’s this discussion about our humanity, how we understand it, and how we are all capable of losing it, gaining it, and how we can be complicit if we don’t pay attention when other people’s humanity is taken from them. This book made sense to me a lot.”
