Tony Benn
...the thing about a diary is what light it throws on daily life...
...the poliitican and prolific diary-keeper on the book he wishes he had written...
Tony Benn may have retired in order to give him, in the words of his wife, "more time for politics", but he's also been doing a huge amount of diary-writing. But what's the book that he most wishes that he'd written himself?
The Diary of Samuel Pepys
The thing about a diary isn't all the important people that he mentioness, but what light he throws on daily life. Diarists have a special role, and this is particularly interesting - written at the end of the English revolution, the discussion he has about democracy and public debates are so relevant today. I would be very proud to have written this.
