"I was being realistic. I know I would never have written Lord Jim or War and Peace, but I might have written this. I think I must have read it when I was about 4 or so, and I'd had a diet of very anodyne books about animals, but this one is very sinister and that was when I realised that the animals in it were like real animals. It's much darker than her other work. It's very realistic. It's a very good story."
